1. What Skattaskýr is
Skattaskýr is an educational clarifier for the Icelandic personal tax-and-transfer system. It exists to help you understand and predict — your take-home pay, your year-end assessment (álagning), how the personal tax credit (persónuafsláttur) works across jobs, and how income-tested benefits respond to your income.
2. What Skattaskýr is not
- Not tax advice, legal advice, or financial advice. Nothing the tool outputs is a recommendation made with knowledge of your full circumstances.
- Not a tax assessment.Only Skatturinn's álagning is authoritative for taxes; only HMS is authoritative for húsnæðisbætur; only Skatturinn for barnabætur and vaxtabætur. If the tool and an official figure disagree, the official figure governs.
- Not affiliated with Skatturinn, HMS, island.is, or any public body.
3. Where the numbers come from (provenance principle)
Every parameter the engine uses is captured from a named public source with a capture date (see the Sources page). Two further commitments:
- Operational over statutory, declared.Where the consolidated statute and the operational figures published by the administering agency conflict (known cases: the húsnæðisbætur withdrawal rate, 9% in the consolidated lög 75/2016 vs 11% in HMS's published 2026 values; the barnabætur rates/thresholds in consolidated 68. gr. vs reglugerð 1400/2024), the engine follows the figures payments actually use — and the app says so where the figure appears. Known conflicts are never silently resolved.
- Scope limits stated. What the model does not include (capital income, foreign-expert relief, disability branches, voluntary pension as a lever) is listed openly, not implied to be covered.
4. Accuracy and its limits
The engine is anchored against real, anonymised payslips and assessment slips (reproduced to within ±1 ISK on the anchor cases) and carries a test suite over sourced parameters. Nevertheless: parameters change, municipalities change rates, your situation may differ from the model's assumptions, and bugs exist. Figures are estimates for the stated tax year and inputs.
Before acting on anything material (changing your credit split, declining work, financial planning), verify with Skatturinn (skatturinn.is, tel. 442-1000) or a licensed advisor.
5. No liability
To the maximum extent permitted by Icelandic law, the operators of Skattaskýr accept no liability for decisions made, or losses incurred, in reliance on the tool's output. See the Terms of Use.
